File sharing

Post by deeahchur »

I have a notion for file sharing among this community, but I'm not sure how everyone will take it. Anyway, here goes!

http://www.DropBox.com offers 2GB free peer to peer file sharing, with larger amounts costing some money. It can handle any file type, as far as I have experimented.

I have installed dropbox on my laptop, desktop, and android phone, and I can upload files to share, including Tron 2.0 LTA and DAT files. All that has to be done is for each person interested in that sharing technique to sign up (for free) and have the program installed on their respective computers, and then invite or be invited to folders of content to be shared. The trick is that if the same name file is uploaded over the one already present, that means it can be changed. Given that, then if there is a community folder, of sorts, make a backup that won't be affected by possible changes.

I'm willing to use some of my maps as testers, if anyone else is interested.

Comments, suggestions, criticisms, etcetera are all welcome, of course.

Sounds like a nice idea. I wonder though if FTP would be easier, and you don't need to install anything, internet explorer does drag & drop FTP all on it's own. Only thing would be supplying a FTP server, which can be anyone's PC with no-ip set up regularly running a virus scanner. I had a version of this http://www.serv-u.com/ that when the demo expired it still ran but with limited # users, maybe I can find it.

Only thing about having your own server is that if people start putting copywritten material on it the server owner is liable for distributing it.

Greetings Programs

I just posted my link to my GBA Killer APP Recognizer for anyone who wishes to use it. I will be making (ALL) my project components from my maps available to anyone who wants them.

Also...
http://www.FileFactory.com

...is a free hosting site that allows up to 500gb of storage on a free account, you just gotta sign up and do a email verification. That is where I will be storing my stuff.

One benefit to the dropbox option is if you change the file on your computer, it'll automatically change it on what is shared (if sharing that specific file that is being opened, anyway), plus, if someone else has a share on the file/folder, then it will automatically update to them in their dropbox folder. It can be handy.

Free for up to 500 GB is great. Is it ANY file type, though? Can .LTA and/or .DAT files be uploaded? Or do they have to be Zipped? Granted, it's easy one way or another, but just asking.

I'll make a filefront account, too.

-EDIT-

I went an looked, I didn't see anything about the file types being limited. The only limt that I saw was your limited to 2000mb files at max, per upload.

I HIGHLY recommend putting your files in a zip/rar file amyway for less space bandwidth usage.

For those sharing my DropBox and checking out the YCP_Evo_HQ map, you will need to import at least two of the YCP converted textures. Just drop the TEX/YCP folder into TEX and import the YCP_(texturename) TGA files (the other ones in that folder are the originals and would be redundant/unnecessary.

Where the two textures are used right now are in the security doors. Since the triggers have not yet been created, the doors are set as non-solid so that you can still walk through them but see how they are laid out.

As noted earlier, I'm definitely willing to contribute!

I'm using DropBox as my primary share, since that is the easiest way for me to update files for use. When I finish packs of stuff, however, I'll put them up on Filefactory and post links.

With my geometry issues, pointed out to me by X, the maps I am sharing for now are mostly for either assistance or suggestions/critiques.

Hangman, you and I share a lot of the same goals for our map ideas. Mine are mostly up for easy read under the YCP Maps thread and Closed Network thread.

Here is my Sweeper vehicle. See image below:

EDIT: rebuild in progress; see thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1167

ooooooooooooooooooooooooo [drools]......
"VERY" nice looking design! Kinda has a Tron meets Resistance meets Star wars kinda feel, LOVE IT! :)
The design of the craft kind of reminds me of the lightflyers used by clu, tron, an the guards at the end of legacy.

I would love to see a redone version of that. But honestly... I think it looks KICK A$$ as is, lol. :)

...I "GOTTA" ask tho, do the turrets still track an fire? Or just unmoving turrents that are part of the geometry of the craft?

--------------------

Ya, I agree Dee, in fact I have been wondering "REALLY" hard if it would be possible to combine your idea for a transport map with mine an both of us see if it would be possible to do a colab. You could make one end an I make the other, the two diffrent styles would come thru nice durring play. That setup alone would def be a diffrent kind of map, which with the two styled sides would make it "FEEL" like a player is moving between two different systems.... just an idea tho, fig'd I would throw it out.
Maybe a Viral infested system vs MCP/or/Unix system setup. I throw that idea out as you seemed very interested in doing a viral map idea using transports. Jus lemme know what ya think, if ya not interested no biggie.

But ya, I gotta say. I REALLY wished the community would start contributing "free custom items/prefabs" to the community. Even if its a crappy little thing, at least contribute ppl. I am going to make "EVERYTHING" In my maps available at regular intervals for ppl to DL an use in there own projects. I Think the community "NEEDS" this as with legacy's release, ALOT of ppl will move on to it just under the assumption that ... "well its newer, so lets just play it".

I styled the Sweeper after the tank turrets, mixed with the Recognizer (bridge section), cross-over with The Last Starfighter/Star Wars X-Wings, and viola! No, the turrets don't move, but thee are gunners in each side, 1 or 2 pilots in the middle, and possibly a Prankster Bit gunner in the bottom middle.

I'll start to remake it. Might be a little slow, though.

I shall also make elements available at, hopefully, regular intervals.

As for map colab, sure, time permitting! Hmmm, a viral ship? Can we say Reavers?! From a Tron point of view, anyway! I like it! Let's do it! We can start with what you have, and add in a Viral transport, as well.

Interesting observation. Let's just take a peek over at this thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=988

Wherein someone asked:
(sigh), I dont have to have the grid bugs, I only intended to have one trapped bedind some rubble down in the light cycle area , not a have to have ... was a wish I could have.
And someone replied:
Can't help you with that specific model, but here's something I was toying with during the UE development. It should just build and run, but any questions shout back. Knock yerself out: http://www.win3k.eu/bugtest.zip
And the silence was deafening. Just sayin'

I meant that no one had ever replied [here] win3k when I stated that, my deepest appologies if I offended you at all.

..only quiet cause I was offline having FITS of joy. :)

---

MY whole point of "my" thread reply posts here Win is that I am trying to get everyone in the community to donate at least (1) thing [here] so that the files can be packed up to make a pack for ppl to be able to download eventually. Thats all I am trying to achieve here Win. An it will be easily found by new modders.

YES, I remember that the gridbug was donated.... but I had honestly forgot who it was tho, I needed to send you a copy of my map prelem for reviewing like the others that offered files an help. I [did] forget which post that was offered in, an had it in mind when I sent the mails out at the point I stated that ---
...(if any of you recall someone else who contributed a file offer in forum, or help regarding learning 2 use Dedit in forum, PLEASE alert me so I can send them a copy as well. Thanks).
---that was in EVERY mail I sent out with the file...saddly.... as I could not remember who exactly had gave me the bug to send them a copy as well, lol.

Again... my bad win.

[steps up to podium in front of press]...
I PUBLICLY APPOLOGIZE to the AWSOME Win3k!
Win3k is the shiznat, I am slime! lol
:)

ok, ppl Win3k's donation is noted for the log. I will now list donations so far....

Just a reminder (ment for everyone who cares and as neutral statement): you can trigger a project, but remind that ppl always have a choice to contribute, so it cannot be forced or demanded.
And, pps can only share that wisdom/content they have and they are able/willing to share. Being frustrated or disappointed, is just a waste of your own time and energy. People are at least as they are, and it should be accepted.

Maybe you want to handle projects (even open projects) as i do:
-Expect much from yourself, and less from other.
-If it is your project -> it is your vision -> it is your task to care, not for anyone else except he wants to.
-Be happy if someone jumps in or you can share something to help, and be happy if you can advance because of a project.

As said, just something to think about, for everyone who likes to do.

My appologies, the statement wasnt intended to provoke, I meant it to express my dissapointment, "[thats all]". I was really down in the dumps when I wrote that reply, an it just came out wrong.

I understand that X, I really do. I just wished that I could get everyone involved in it. Just wanted to leave something for the community as a whole. An I will expect more of myself, I will do everything that I can to continue to see the idea of a community mod files pack thru to completion, even if I have to beg and plead ppl.
The TRON moding fanbase is more important than just what I need for me alone.

I wanted to just make a HUGE downloadable document containing all the tidbits of information spread over here an tron sector, but I was afraid to do that as some may get upset that they are exposed as "appearing stupid/unlearned" in the Questions taken out of context from the posts. Thats why I was just hoping ppl would throw free to community files in instead.

I am [HONESTLY] NOT trying to start something! I am ONLY trying to see that Tron 2.0's moding community not die off with the new games release and everyone seeming to be moving on to it an leaving 2.0 behind.

Again my appologies, if I have offended alot of ppl, I will be more than happy to leave the forum. It wasnt my intention [at all] to offend anyone. Again, I posted when I was not in my right mind -emotionally, an things came out wrong.

Again, I appologise
