y'see ive never got that, the joke about british dentists or brushing our teeth. our dental system is the same as any other countries so it cant be satirical... :?
anyway, the recent thing with america i didnt get was this. the virginia tech massacre was what it's called, a massacre so im not guna make a joke about that. but the thing that i find mindbogling is that they said that the fact that the guy had a gun wasnt main problem, but the fact that the other students didnt have guns to fire back.
hey Hank the Yank! fire doesnt beat fire. it just makes more fire. and fire is bad

I guess what they're saying is that once the nutjob started firing, other students could have taken him out with their own weapons and prevented him from killing more...but they don't explain that the same amount of people would have been hurt in the crossfire from other students trying to be heroes. All it would do is transfer the number of people hurt or killed from the "Victims" list to the "Innocent Bystanders" list.

And you're wrong, British hygiene is terrible. :-D  8) :P :o :-) :D

I think the primary problem there is that our schools seem to be run by idiots over here in the US. Where I live, they know that it's a good idea to let all of the High School students out at 11:15 AM on the last day of school. That seems to make perfect sense until they tell the busses not to come to the school until 3:00 PM.

Sounds like some Neo-Conservative idiot statement to me.

What really annoys me are people that are so bold in stating their views and believing they are right when, with a trace of common sense, it's obviously wrong. I just want to yell "Your ideology is wrong you moron!" at them. I'd probably do that to Ann Coulter if I had the chance.... :???:

Gah! our hygiene is fine! win3k and sparks help me out here! HurtSmiley
yeah avi, and in the heat of the moment, realistically, college students arnt guna suddenly turn rambo and have a big chance of shooting the guy. it takes a LOT of training in the army to get over that fear wall.

a bit off topic but: we're doing the theory of evolution in biology at the moment and how people reacted to it. just to help with an essay on it that i gotta do, how do people take it now? was it put off being taught in school when it came out? is creationism still more common than evolution?

Dinosaurs FTW!

This is a can of worms that I hesitate to open in public, but what the hell...I'm feeling frisky today.

My story goes back to my very first Bible. I think I was 7 or 8 years old when it occurred to me that there was a glaring omission from this giant book that I was being forced to read in Catholic school. Surely, the Christian scholars from two thousand years ago couldn't have left out the part about animals as big as houses walking around! That would have been the best part! I decided to ask my teacher why there were no T. Rex's in the Old Testament.

The teacher said something to the effect of "Well, when it says that God created all of the animals in one day...well, umm...one day to God is actually billions and billions of years...so, uhh...the dinosaurs died and the other animals were created much later and...uhh...go to detention immediately and you think about what you did".

Punished for wanting knowledge. If there really was an Adam and Eve, I could sympathize with them. Most revolutionaries throughout history also understand the feeling of landing on the wrong side of the law for simply asking questions...asking "why?".

Religions all over the world loathe that word. It stirs contempt for those that refuse to satisfy the hunger that the word brings with it. The word "why" devours anything in front of it that isn't ready to give up concrete proof to quench it's endless thirst for knowledge. I happen to love that word. My Catholic school teachers did not.

The only way to keep kids from asking the dinosaur question is to teach them something else in order to soothe their curiosity. Something called "Creationism". I call this process "mind enslavement".

By ranting about ranting, you have divided by zero and created an alternate dimension that reverses all logic! Why did you do that?

My rant: Check Norris. I've heard that guy can divide by zero and also, on top of that, slam a revolving door. What a showoff!

Speaking of Chuck Norris, I heard that he fears everyone's favorite B-Movie actor, Bruce Campbell.

slamming revolving doors? dividing by zero to form an alternate dimension? my head hurts...
with regards to teh (rofl) issue with dinosaurs, my muslim view is that considering that a day is described as being able to be as infinitely long to god, then the 6 days are unspecified lengths of time that does follow the order of evolution of the animals of today. when we hear of 'animals' being created, we dont have to say that they are todays animals, but could have been dinosaurs

Yes, but they specifically mention animals that were around at the time that the Bible was written...not once do they describe anything like what we've discovered in marsh pits and in deserts. You can't honestly believe that dinosaurs are referenced anywhere in the Bible...c'mon, seriously. That's stretching it a bit.

I've talked to a couple people who've incorporate pieces of evolutionary theory into their religion, such as microevolution, where a species created by a god has evolved and diversified.

I've found that debates between science & religion easily end up detrimental for both sides (end around thinking or saying either your nuts or your going to need asbestos clothing). Many people need science, many people need a belief in something higher, and many people want both, and I don't think anyone even slightly open minded is a 100% believer either way. I can always see good done on both sides, and bad too. Another thing is everyone's biased in their views on this, really hard to find any kind of middle. Probably the only time this has to be discussed is if your running for political office.

I did realize one thing though, there is really only 1 continually refining science, while there's 4200 religions and more being added. That was probably a biased statement...

Right. You have to realize that people today are a lot smarter than they were 2,000 years ago (if you can believe that). Even today, if you look at remote islands with tribes that lack the benefits of modern technology, they rely heavily on religion to explain things. Without science, how was early man supposed to understand things like evolution and weather events? He used the only tool available to him at the time...his imagination.

Talking snakes. Seas opening up and swallowing whole armies. Why did those miraculous events cease to take place as the world in general became more intelligent?

But I say it's up to each individual to choose what's right for him/her. If you need the fear of eternal damnation to keep from sleeping with your neighbor's wife, then you believe that. Like Geddy Lee says, "I will choose free will". Some people don't need to be scared to death in order to live a good life...that was probably a biased statement too.
