HL2 brings the old cliche to mind: "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts".
There are a lot of little things in HL2 that aren't that innovate or exciting, but if you take the game as a whole . . . somehow it just works. And works very well. Despite all the little flaws, you just have to forgive them and you still have a blast playing the game.
As X said, the atmosphere in HL2 is breathtaking. This is one of the few games that makes you feel like you're really there. It has some of the most realisitic looking environments, ever. It's approaching photo-realism.
I'd like to get back into playing HL2 DM soon. I played it when the DM update was first released, and had a lot of fun with it. Now they've added new weapons and a new map, and I'd like to try them out.

Unfortunately i hoped DeusEx 2 would have such an athmosphere. I played the first part and it was one of the greatest game i ever played, becuase of the complexity and athmosphere. Galdfully HL2 was able to bring in the athmosphere we knowed from its first part. But it is noticable that money brought quality extremly down the last years. It's a shame.

A couple of games I still need to play, are Deus Ex and System Shock 2. I have both, but never really got around to playing them. (I did try SS2 briefly, but then never finished it.)
Are there any other games similar to these, that anyone can recommend? I think I should like SS2, since it shares some superficial similarities with Tron.
I heard Deus Ex 2 was pretty bad, so I doubt I'll bother playing it.

Reminds on Prey (uses Doom3 engine). Doom3 engine also uses this portal-technology, Prey just brought it to a massive experience. You can jump through, see through. Also other things were possible like e.g. watching a small glass-cube with an orb-stone inside from outside, then through a portal you are suddenly small and running on this orb inside the cube, watching enemies standing outside, searching you. You can run on walls, overhead, everywhere, it is really amazing. I started to think if that engine might would be useful to be modded for Tron-stuff for several reasons: better support, customizing skins and models possible, glowing exists, more gameplay modes and sources to extend the engine. But before any decision, i wait for the Unreal 3 engine.

There's a guy over at the TRON sector starting a TRON Mod project with the Doom 3 engine.
here's the link: http://www.tron-sector.com/forums/defau ... &id=341064
Of course if you jump over to some other engine keep us posted. I would be interested in learning other tools and offering production support to you.
