Garry's Mod

Post by Avi »

I've been messing with GMod lately, and it's a nice departure from the "frag or be fragged" gameplay of 99.9% of all of the other games on the market. You have a bunch of tools to work with, and if you're creative you can make some pretty cool gadgets.

Last night I made a sloppy replica of the land speeder from the beginning of Star Wars Episode IV using a bathtub, some propane tanks, and a few thrusters. I painted it a reddish brown to finish it off and sent the thing blasting off all over the map, running over and killing half of the NPC's that I had spawned. Then, it hit a small lake and I had to do some diving in order to recover it. Apparently, bathtub-propane tank land speeders do not float when they are upside down.

If some of you already have the free 9.0 Gmod, it's worth the ten bucks to get the supported version. There are lots more options to work with and the layout is more intuitive. Online play is just weird. Most of the servers are running their own mod of the game and it takes some time to understand the rules. One server had people placing toy houses down different aisles of a grocery store (WTF?), but there were certain rules that dictated where you could place the houses. I was completely lost. One other server had people doing some role playing in which you could earn money to achieve certain professions. The game is pretty much limitless in the hands of it's users.

There is a way to play a bit of Tron in Gmod, but it involves rusty saw blades and a gravity gun.

Hit me up here if you have it or plan on getting it. It would be cool to have some competitions and show off the results here in the forums. I figure that between all the guys in LDSO we'd have some pretty crazy results.

I found some interesting stuff for Garry's Mod. They're not all that great, but they do show potential for some Tron-like game modes.

Looky looky:

I'm sure that if someone that is more familiar with the world of Tron they could make some more convincing Tron hands.

Here's some maps that have some Tron-like qualities:

I was messing around with creating a "Deadly Discs" game mode last night, and it's coming along. I used a circular saw blade in place of a disc and changed it's texture so that it glowed. I added a blue trail to it so that when you launch it with the gravity gun, you can see exactly where it went (and it allows others to see it coming at them). When the disc hits another player, it rips them in half (but there's a way to make someone look like they are derezzing...I just have to figure it out).

I'll post some screenshots this weekend after I make a few adjustments.

I've always wanted to try Garry's Mod. For that matter, I've always wanted to goof around in Hammer, to see how it compares with the other editors out there.

But first things first . . . I need to upgrade my PC some time in the next 3 weeks. So I can play me some HL2 Eps 1-2, Portal, Bioshock, Stalker, and maybe some Gears of War and Crysis too. I've got a lot of catching up to do. PDT_Armataz_01_11
