Disc Arena

Nicola posted in another thread that there weren't enough DA maps. Here's a possible explanation:

Some people don't have much patience. In Derez or LC, you can play the game by yourself, more so in LC than Derez, but you get the point. In DA, you have to wait for a while to play (because you need at least two people) unless it is a pre-arranged meeting. So, less people are actually playing DA. It would follow that therefore there would be fewer maps made for Disc Arena.

well no, to be put it simply.
you cant play derez by yourself, and if you do then you have far too much free time. in Lc you could maybe warm-up by doing some tight turns and stuff but boredom quickly seeps in after 2 minutes.
the reason there are less DA maps is because is it much more difficult and complicated to make, only a few people have the skill and patience to make them, (cheers X!)

Another reason is that some mappers don't even play (or like) the other modes ;)

I understand the appeal to the small group of people that enjoy it. It's more of a sport than a game, and having to wait in the lobby until you are called is a pretty unique feature. I kind of like it...it makes you feel like you're really competing in something and gives you some time to come up with a new strategy between games.

i used to be dissatisfied with DA since theres only one kind of weapon, but due to lack of games i just play what ever is being played, as ive gotten used to all of them.

ETA on nicolas arrival on this thread: a matter of seconds... :P

Well, it works marvoulously with the DSO_AS_REBOUND map; The only DA map that I can actually beat someone on without being a blockwhore, lol. :D

Bingo ! Such to distract other players. Many veterans have done this in the past to hail for their friends while to interfere their opponents to ensure their bhuddies chances to win. :P This realy only happened in DA because in LC people even had enough time to chat while they navigated their cycles. But ok excuse me, ...with the lameass slow circuit speed that the most have prefered (even though they were vets) there was no interest to achieve any scoreboards.

At least the most didn't paid interest to this. Only a few such Layer, Crash, Dirk & Co were in compition to each other. Very different it was with DA & DM. Apropos DA, when u kept it seriously going, there was no time for chatting & in DM there was some addiction for a clean flow. For exellent lowpings u could easily aim at the respawned players. It gave u big advantage for faster scoring plus a nice flow. In other words DM was for players who looked for the flow & fast scoring but it didn't suit for the strategiest who then was a Disc Arena fan.

The reason why the most LC players prefered DM instead DA has also a reason that makes a sense. DM was easier to handle when u pinged not high & the netcode worked differently. In DM u aimed at what u see while in DA u had to predict. So the main reason wasn't impatience because i remember DA always has been a more popular gamemode. And for that fact i'm sad that Derezze got more costummaps support than DA. As always....u never get what u want. U only get what u dislike.

Many thanks. :D

When I played this game when it came it I quickly burned out on all the jumping around in DA, and was burned out on DM just because I played too much of that type of game before, in addition to the jumping.

When I came back to this game and found that there's a strategy & sport to DA, I really dug it. But LC is just relaxing and fun to play, especially after seeing guys like Layer & Crash do those crazy weaves. And having spent time getting the hang of it, I have a hard time going back to the constant jumping in arena again.

So for those who just want a game to wind down with, LC is it. Unfortunately pings the most important for LC I think, but I'm working on a map that makes that much more tolerable. It might have some purple in it if X doesn't mind. Actually I think it was Mor that used alot of purple too.

Purple is just a color, so no one has any copyrights on it. Just use it. Different to textures someone made, but here as well from my side: if you like to use textures i made in the past, you are welcome and feel free to use them w/o asking for permission.

No u need to ask ME first because purple is ma color in Tron ! hahaha Joke aside, ...for outsiders the gamestyle in DA just looked like silly jumping but in reality it was a clever footwork.

There more randomly ur footwork happend the harder the prediction (reading & guessing ur moves) became for ur opponent. If u put the competition aside for a minute u will recognize DA's concept still as virtual sport by remembering the story of the tron movie ( u know, the slave programms that had to derezze each other to stay alive as long as possible with big hopes to get located & retrieved by the user).

Basically u may compare the gamegrid with gladiatorial contests in colosseum with the difference that the Roman Empire would be the MCP & Sark.

Lightcycles are not relaxing when u drive in full circuit speed & small environments. So i may assume u are on of those who never got used to the maxium speed. ;)

Ya those are aggravating sometimes and others a nice jolt of adrenalin. I don't get the full speed LC servers, only good for the guy who's running it locally.
