Taking Over Armagetron Advanced
At this very moment, there are more people online playing Armagetron Advanced than there have ever been for Tron 2.0.
Why is that so? It's not even an official Tron Light Cycle game, but because it's free it's very popular. I asked some guys if they have Tron 2.0, and they replied "idk...what is it?".
And I have to admit, those guys are really good at light cycles. It would be awesome if we could convince some of them to make the jump to Tron 2.0. Perhaps if someone set up an Armegetron server under the LDSO name and encouraged them to visit the site? Most sites have a pretty high ping, so having one stateside might be a sure bet to attract players.
As far as the game itself, I still prefer our version of LC. Armagetron has some bugs to work out and the maps aren't that varied...but it has the potential to net some new blood for our own game. The main difference is that you can touch the light trails for a few seconds as long as you change direction before you explode. Also, players have a setting in the in-game menu called Player Police where they can kick others out (it just happened to me  )

Yeah, I've always been a bit puzzled as to why more Armagetron players don't get into Tron 2.0.
I think it's for three reasons. One of which you've already pointed out, Avi. It's free, and easy to download. If you want to buy a copy of Tron 2.0, it takes a bit of work to find one for purchase. Also, Armagetron probably has lower hardware requirements.
The other two reasons are probably: 1) Tron 2.0 was poorly marketed and advertised, so a lot of people still don't know it exists. 2) A lot of people probably think you can only play it on a LAN. The game box, documentation, and even the warning in the game when you try to join a server on the internet, all make you think that Light Cycles over an internet connection isn't possible.
You've definitely got an interesting idea, there. Maybe we should set up an Armagetron server to advertise Tron 2.0. Heh heh.

Well, I hung out for a bit...they got pissed because I didn't know the rules right away. Then, I got kicked for what I assume was talking too much. I wasn't really doing it that much, but I was the outsider that they just didn't want to deal with.
The game is kind of fun, but it's not Tron 2.0 by any stretch of the imagination. The camera angles are bad, the graphics are poor, the maps are dark and boring, and the gameplay is slightly different (some ways good, some bad). There are different types of games, like CTF and some other game where you have to take over the other team's base or something. Some of them were amazed that I was able to cut corners so well even though I was a "noob"...lol.
A few thought Tron 2.0 was the new movie, and some thought it was an Armagetron upgrade. After trying to explain, I was looking at a screen that said "You have been kicked by an angry mob. Stay away."
Oh well. I just joined their forum and I'm going to see what's going on. Their website has a ton of activity...probably more than Tron-Sector, LDSO, and Boxhat combined. Sadly, there isn't one single mention of Tron 2.0 on their site.

Here's a screenshot of me kicking ass in Armagetron (read all of the lines of white text, especially the last one ):
Within ten minutes I had reached the 3rd position on the ladder (starting off at 166th place).
People were telling me "I thought you said you were new to the game!"
I told them I used to organize light cycle tournaments for Tron 2.0, and they went "Argghh... no wonder".
I'm still getting the hang of it, though.

So, they didn't kick you off this time for talking about Tron 2.0? And they actually knew what it was?!

I found out a few of them had heard of Tron 2.0, but they didn't believe me when I said it was a much better game. From what I see, there's only one map in Armagetron (which is basically the light cycle level from the movie...though not as cool as Layer's version *respectfully bows towards the state of Alabama*).
I can't get over how many people are playing it. Servers are full of people racing light cycles...just unbelievable. I saw at least 8 servers that had a minimum of 5 people playing last night. I played in as many as I could, but the rules were different for each server and I'd get frustrated and leave.
I think it's really easy to mod your game also. I read that you can change the colors of the game grid, your light cycle, etc. I think we should all check it out and incorporate this game into our little community.
Whadda ya think?

Heck i'm going to try it, really suprising. Only thing is that it's open source...people compiling their own versions could really cause big problems. But sounds like fun!
LDSO should have a clan match with them some time. Maybe bring in a few members to build the masses?
I'm thinking alot of those guys enjoy the fact that it is open source and ideas & fixes can be brought in by potentially anyone, and there's always support. Also that it runs on all popular OS's

One of them came up with a friends list patch for the game already. You can DL it on their forum.Daddyo wrote: I'm thinking alot of those guys enjoy the fact that it is open source and ideas & fixes can be brought in by potentially anyone
It's definitely worth downloading. I'm having more fun with those guys the more I play it. I'm usually on a server that says "(no rubber)" at the end of the name...that means that if you hit a wall, you derez instantly. Actually, it's called a Core Dump in this game, not a derez.
Would the LDSO guys mind if the rest of us tagged up while playing Armagetron? Perhaps that would make a few of them curious and would lead them here.
One interesting "rule" in some servers is that you aren't allowed to seal off or close a box to trap an opponent. WTF? Those guys would HATE to play against Layer or Crash.

Just played a few rounds with Daddyo, who kicked much ass I must say.
It was fun to take on strangers in a game that's so familiar, yet very different. Seeing Daddyo in the server actually made me not try to win so hard and just have fun instead. I wasn't doing so hot with the peer pressure and all...

Here's a link to the Armagetron Wiki:
http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
They use different terminology than we do for the game, so reading a bit of their (very detailed) Wiki might help understand how they play.
Read about "rubber", "feinting", "boxing" (we know that one already), and a few other Armagetron memes.

I did compile the source code except some generic library stuff. Since I've never really dug through a 3-d game before, I was suprised how much code there is to it for as "simple" as a game it is. It would be fun to add features if they'd take it. It looked like most of the contributors were outside of the US (just reading the dev names)."
I didn't think I was doing very good, but there were a few times were it said I had won what I think was a set of 10 rounds, but not sure how I did it. That burn rubber server had me hosed up for awhile with the brakes reversed to speed you up instead!! Was the game killing me for loitering?

No it wasn't...lol...I don't know what was going on last night. The round would end while there were still people playing and you kept getting the point. HAX!
I happened to find you in my favorite server. The "No Rubber" server is more like the game that we are used to, so I'm sticking with it until I learn everything else.
I'm also interested to see what you might contribute to the game, Daddyo. Maybe some frikkin' laser beams?
I saw a skin pack for the cycles that makes them look exactly like the movie (or Tron 2.0), but I don't know how to apply it to the game. I tried the Wiki, but don't see anything there that applies to the type of file that I downloaded.

I remember [><] to have invited me somewhen during 2006. He said to me that he & many of his friends are there & i wouldn't be suprised if more than the half of the Tron 2.0 lightycle players are there too. I tried the game & then refused to play allthough this game would have some advantages versus Tron 2.0:
a) much better netcode handling
b) balance of server availability of hosts (europe & states)
c) much activity/impulse from players (gamers, moders).
d) it's lesser latency sensetiv as the game isn't oveloaded with much special effects & colors & the gameendinge seems to run smooth which allows many players, even with older machines & operating systems to play it.
The negative points are:
a) that u often get kicked for no reason (such u talked or asked too much or offended a rule during ur gameplay or u were too long afk etc...) and that's somehow childish u know but well they can afford to be strict with the people such this as they have nothing to loose. As we talk abut a free game it still get's newbies endlessly.
b) and what i hate the most is the gameplay. I still don't know if the game has a freecam or just a fixed with all these uncomfortable angles. I hate to drive with fixed or first person - cam like the pest. So to me the gameplay is the weakest part in this game. And there areotoo much features that u can't configurate on ur keyboard in a way that would suit to u. I mean we speak about lightcycles ...a game about fast frenzy so u don't have much time until u find or reach a key with ur finger that is not near to ur standard grasp.
c) The fact that this game is about Lightcycles only & i'm famous for my Disc Arena fetishmn i would love to have some variety.
F@$K that game. It's not as good as people think. Of course Tron 2.0 has many bugs, a latency sensetive engine & horrible netcode handling but who knows....probably many would switch to Tron 2.0 if they would know about this game & then get informed where to get a cracked version. But as long as many veterans stay away from visiting the gamegrid often i have my doubts it would work to increase activity with newcomers. Just think logical guys....an Armagetron player is spoiled & therefore would expect to see activity reguardless if it's a chinese, an europe or american player. And with this emptiness on our serverlist it's too much of an eyesore. Wouldn't u agree with me ? Before we think about to lure players to Tron 2.0 we first should find a stable rate of activity. I don't mean we could or should try to accomplish that every day which can't be done anymore. But at least at weekends...so we could have the excuse that we are just a bunch of weekenders.

I started this topic, but I have been debating something ever since:
Why try to get new people on the grid if we don't even play it ourselves?
This past week I joined a couple of Tron 2.0 servers and just idled there to see if someone would join. I haven't seen a soul in months, so why would we try to entice others to play?
We have enough players floating around out there to keep servers full, but it seems there just isn't any interest in the game anymore. I remember the first KOTG Derez game, when we filled up the 16 player server. 9Volt has some good screenshots from that night (we took a group picture...lol). Everyone was into the game and having a good time, but then *poof*. It's all over, and those of us that still hunger for that friendly competitive gameplay are forced to search for it in other forums, settling for games that are familiar yet very different.
Crash doesn't even hang out in the servers anymore. That, to me, is unbelievable.
Tronfaq pointed out to me that someone started a thread in Tron Sector about organizing Friday Night Fights again. I think that if someone wants to pump blood back into the game, it's fairly easy to rely on the nostalgia of veteran players for a limited time...but then it falls back into the void for some reason.
Maybe it's cyclical, and if we wait for a few more months everyone will get back into it. In the meantime, I'll have to get my fix with Armagetron, trying to figure out what in the hell is going on half the time.
