Game Platforms
PC Version
Originally to be called "Tron Killer App",

started development in 2001 at Monolith. The game was intended for release in March of 2003, but subsequently became delayed until August 26th of that year. Rumors suggest the main reason for the delay was to properly implement the Multiplayer side of the game. Apparently, there were no plans to have the Light Cycle feature work on the Internet at all. But a "focus group" study revealed that everyone demanded online Light Cycle play, as a main reason for wanting to buy the game. How ironic that this feature ended up being supported only in an "unofficial" capacity, regardless.
Mac Version
A Macintosh version of

was announced as released on
Apple's site on April 21, 2004 from developer
MacPlay. (They previously did the Mac ports of Monolith's No One Lives Forever and No One Lives Forever 2.) This version is online play compatible with the existing PC community. And it's been recently discovered that custom maps from the PC version, can be made to run with some success. Click

Xbox Version
The Xbox version, entitled

: Killer App, was officially released on November 2nd, of 2004. It came out nearly a month later than the originally planned ship date, and fell smack into the Halo 2 release time period.

(A tentative date of October 5th had been floating around.) It would seem that Buena Vista Games felt the "Killer App" moniker was too clever to let go unused, so they added it to the title of the Xbox version. Either that, or they decided to use it because they'd already paid for the domain name back when the PC version was going to be called "Killer App", so why let it go to waste, right? Or even more likely, they probably felt it sounded "cooler" and "edgier", judging by their press release. They seem to be trying their hardest to make this version somehow sound like it's more your typical fragfest Halo-style shooter. Whatever.
As it turns out, the Xbox version will be more than a straight port. New content is being added to the game. For example, there will be more Multiplayer models such as: Sark, the MCP Guards, ICP Kernel, DataWraith, Thorne, and at least two other new characters . . . one of which is an Xbox-themed character. In addition, new Multiplayer modes have been added. Capture the Flag (Data Capture) and combined Light Cycle/Derez Deathmatch (OverRIDE) modes are now in the game. OverRIDE allows you to instantly switch between driving Light Cycles and moving on foot while doing combat. Other additions include 10 new Multiplayer maps and four new weapons (Disc Charger, Rod Rifles, Ball Storm, and Burst Cannon).
While I think it's all fine-and-dandy that an Xbox version is being released, which will increase market share for BVG, and awareness for

as a whole (which could help ensure future development of more

goodies) . . . I don't think owners of the PC version of the game are going to appreciate the fact that the Xbox version will — essentially — be superior to the PC version, because of the added features. Also, Multiplayer in this version will occur through Microsoft's Xbox Live service, meaning that those who play the Xbox version will not be able to play against those who own the PC version. This is a great blow to the online community that has already developed around the

game, because it could have added to their ranks and made them a greater force to be reckoned with. Now the community will be divided, by which particular version of the game they own.
If BVG is smart, they will release an expansion pack that, at a minimum, adds the new features of the Xbox version to the PC version. Hopefully, they would even go beyond that, and add the features that so many of us have been requesting. (Many of these can be found in the
9.8 Bugs and Wish List section.) But I fear that the new features of the Xbox version are going to be "Xbox exclusive" for a long period of time, in order to boost sales of the game. One only needs to look back at the "XP Only" patch situation, to predict that this will be the case.

This FAQ will be updated to cover the Xbox version, in time. The Mac version should be identical to the PC version, so almost everything that is currently in the FAQ will apply.
